Field Studies

Gloucester has many unique geological features that are being utilized to enhance science knowledge and skills by using the outdoors as a learning laboratory. Field studies are linked to the students’ science textbooks, classroom activities and Massachusetts State Standards. Each student in grades 2 through 6 receives at least one field trip per school year to study biological and geological aspects of Cape Ann. Not only do our students learn science but they also learn to become stewards of our natural resources.

The programs includes:

  • Grade 2 students are learning life and earth science by exploring Tide Pools.
  • Grade 3 students are gaining hands-on experience in geology by going on a hike to the summit of Gloucester’s Mount Avalon.
  • The Grade 4 Vernal Ponds program is linked to the Massachusetts Frameworks for Life Science whereby students are taught observation skills, scientific analysis methods, and the importance of ecology niches.
  • Grade 4 Geography and Mapping studies teach students observation skills, the importance of making notes and following instructions by using compasses and maps to find hidden “treasures”.
  • Studying ecosystems is extended into the 5th Grade where students learn to use microscopes to study form and function in plants.
  • Other programs for the 5th Grade include Math and Physical Science of Simple Machines such as pendula, slides, see-saws, gears and spinners.
  • The Grade 6 Field Study combines Global Positioning Sysem (GPS) mapping with the ecology and cultural history of Cape Ann’s Dogtown area. The programs meet State Standards in earth science, technology, geography, computer science and mathematics. Each class creates an accurate map and written guide for an area in Dogtown which is integrated into computer maps.
